Hallo, ich bin Vicky

Vicky, your German teacher
A German riverside town with red rooftops and church spires along the water

She's African and she speaks German like a German. So can you.

I grew up in a small town close to Munich, one of the only Black girls in the room, and nobody was coming to help me with the language. I was the first daughter, so the responsibility landed where it always lands. When official letters arrived at our house, I was the one who read them out. My mother had done the German courses and still could not follow what those letters were asking of her, so I stood at the table and worked it out word by word until I could tell her what it said. That is how I learned German. Nobody handed me a map. I drew it myself.

Most people who write to me have been circling Germany for a year already. They downloaded an app in January and made it to lesson six. Somebody told them the Goethe exam is impossible for beginners. Somebody else quoted them a price for a package they never fully understood, took the money, and went quiet. By the time they reach my inbox they are not asking about grammar. They are asking whether this is even possible for someone like them.

It is, and you do not have to work it out alone the way I did. I have taken over a thousand people through German and I teach to Goethe standard. When you sit that exam, nothing in it will be the first time you have seen it.

What you can do by the end

1.You walk into a room and introduce yourself. Name, where you're from, what you do, why you're there.

2.You order food, ask for directions, ask how much something costs, and say you didn't understand and could they say it again.

3.You talk about your family, your day, your work, and the things you like.

4.You follow slowly spoken German instead of catching one word in ten.

5.You write a short message or fill a simple form without opening a translator.

6.You sit the Goethe A1 exam already knowing the shape of every section.

How the class runs

Three evenings a week for eight weeks, ninety minutes each night, and when you log into that Zoom room, it's my face waiting for you every time.

Seven seats, so you speak in every single class. There is nowhere to hide in a room that size, which is the point.

If you miss a session, you get the slides and the homework, and we pick it up at the start of the next one.

What comes with it

  • Over 100 lesson slides, built by me for this course
  • A course textbook
  • A full three hour mock exam, so exam day is the second time you sit it, not the first
  • Homework PDFs after every session, marked and corrected by me
  • Vocabulary lists for every topic we cover
  • Games and flashcard drills we run at the start of each class

What students say

I started learning German and quickly worked out how hard it was going to be. Then I thought about the people who already speak it. If they can master this thing, why can't I.

Then a video came up where she went through “I eat” in all six past tenses, one after the other, in under a minute. Nobody had ever laid it out like that. I understood it right there. That was the video that made me message her.
